You don’t even need a reservation!īut, there’s a big learning curve to become a pro boondocker… It connects you to nature, gives you total privacy, and costs absolutely nothing. You really can’t miss it as you will see several RVs parked sporadically up the hill.Boondocking is the best way to experience freedom as an RV traveler. There is a gated, dirt road that leads straight to the two towers on the left. When coming south from Wall, SD towards the north entrance, you will see three large towers (possibly cell and/or radio towers): one on the right and two on the left. This camping area is actually on the outer ridge of the Badlands just a minute or two from the north entrance of the park.
Badlands Boondocking: LocationĪs I said, we are at Badlands National Park in South Dakota, but we are not actually IN the national park. However, dry camping is actually camping in a campground without hookups whereas boondocking is camping without hookups outside of a typical campground setting. If you are not familiar with the terms dry camping and boondocking, they are pretty much the same and often used interchangeably.

Now we’ve boondocked for almost 2 full weeks just outside of Badlands National Park. Nothing like jumping in with both feet, right?!? It has definitely been an experience. This tip is especially helpful if you drive a bigger rig. We share our boondocking experience as we explore Mackinaw City, Michigan. One of the best boondocking tips we can give is to send someone to scout ahead. Episode 1 of our Michigan to Maine Series. Back in June, we dry camped at Cosby Campground in Tennessee for 4 days. As long as you understand that larger rigs won’t be able to fit into some tighter spots and generally use your common sense, you should be good to go.
